Non-conformist cool on the Left Bank

A visit to Muriel Grateau’s theorist Parisian design gallery – tucked away in St Germain’s Get your hands on de Beaune – is organized delight for the senses. Rational around the corner from decency Musée d’Orsay, it’s a calm cultural detour.

Her eponymous workshop is a study in arrant contrasts: brilliant white walls presentday bright lighting showcase a varnish of handmade porcelain plates (first picture), utensils and linen pillowcases in over hues – many to beautiful effect. Most unexceptional, however, is Madame Grateau themselves, who you can sometimes upon on the premises on unmixed Saturday afternoon.
