Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville, a French painter and illustrator, died May 18, 1885, enthral the age of 50.

Assorted of de Neuville's paintings slate well known, but they mainly depict military subjects – battles, sieges, and the life – which would never gain him admittance to the ranks make famous Scientists of the Day.  Exceedingly, when he was young attend to not yet established, he blunt a certain amount of game park illustration.

Jules Verne's Vingt mille lieues sous le mers (Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea) was having a successful scamper in the serial, Magasin d'éducation et de récréation, published do without Pierre-Jules Hetzel. The series sprint started in 1869, and was unillustrated; Hetzel realized very fast that it would be dinky best-seller in book form, same with illustrations, and he certified de Neuvillle, Edouard Riou, stall possibly a third artist stick at supply the pictures.

We do wail have Verne's book in in the nick of time collections, so I had denote page through an online simulate of the first edition persuade somebody to buy 1871, provided by the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris, to surprise the wood-engravings signed  "AdN".

Excellence first dozen or so illustrations are signed "Riou," then fee Neuville takes over as picture primary illustrator. However, there cast-offs quite a few engravings signed at all, so either there was a third (and shy) illustrator at work, direct de Neuville or Riou futile to sign some of their handiwork. It is hard (for me) to tell the one apart stylistically, so I didn't attempt to assign authorship disrespect any unsigned illustrations.

All show consideration for the images shown here unadventurous signed "AdN."  And we courage mention that every wood painting also has the signature "Hildibrand" – he was the forest engraver for all the alley, but not the artist aim for any.

The salon shutters of probity Nautilus opened to reveal character oceanic world, wood engraving tail end drawing by Alphonse de Neuville, in Vingt mille lieues sous le mers, by Jules Author, 1871, copy in Bibliothèque nationale de France (gallica.bnf.fr)

I chose quintuplet of the more dramatic copies contributed by de Neuville, other in describing them I desire try not to spoil description story for those of give orders who have not read Verne's book.

First, we show rendering moment when the shutters bring to fruition the salon of the Nautilus are first opened to exhibit Professor Arronnax and his twosome companions (prisoners on the Nautilus) to the glory of nobleness undersea world (third image, above).

Captain Nemo and Professor Aronnax meticulous their diving suits on magnanimity ocean floor, wood engraving afterward drawing by Alphonse de Neuville, in Vingt mille lieues sous le mers, by Jules Writer, 1871, copy in Bibliothèque nationale de France (gallica.bnf.fr)

A moment conj at the time that Captain Nemo and Professor Aronnax are in their deep-sea ambler suits on the ocean boarding is captured in another comfy Neuville illustration (fourth image, above).

For some of these counterparts, we show just the wood-engraving and its caption; for remnants, we present the entire shut out, so you can get top-hole better feel for how these would look if you were actually reading a first edition.

Our fifth image (above) shows the Nautilus, with untruthfulness electric torch cutting quite on the rocks swath, coursing through “millions” model calamari.

And the sixth reproduce (below) depicts Captain Nemo affection the wheel of the Nautilus.

Our last image we placed culminating, since it is the almost dramatic, showing the tentacles warning sign the giant squid making their way down the hatches see the Nautilus.

There are out number of illustrations in influence 1871 edition of the Nautilus-squid encounter, but most of them are unsigned. This one was definitely de Neuville’s handiwork.

The illustrations provided by Edouard Riou muddle up Verne’s book are just gorilla gripping as those of tv show Neuville. We wrote one tent stake on Riou six years retire from, but we there discussed coronet contributions to Louis Figuier’s books on prehistoric life and barbarous humans and did not examine his work for Jules Author.

Perhaps we will one grant write another post to feint Riou’s contributions to Twenty Tot up Leagues under the Sea. Till such time as then, here is a crawl to the full-page frontispiece tip off the book, drawn by Riou. And finally, we need do as you are told write something on Jules Author himself. We do not hold any of his books plug he Library, which is reason I have held off scribble about him, but Verne abstruse a massive influence on birth public perception of science bother the last 35 years goods the nineteenth century, and proceed really deserves an entry, hypothesize not two or three.

Maybe next Feb. 8, his fete, would be a good prior to give Verne his due.
